Red Stem Chicory (40-86)

Product Code: 40-86
$5.00

Cicoria Rossa Italiana. Some call this Red Dandelion, but it is a true chicory. Requires a rich, well-tilled soil. Mid-early, upright plant with a large, closely wrapped head. Intense gree, serrated leaves are tall, with large red ribs. Said to be an excellent forcing variety. Take the well-developed plants out in the fall, bunch the leaves and remove secondary roots. Then put in a cooler, closed tub or dark basement and cover lightly with soil. Be the first to let us know about this! 10 gram packet. Approximately 600-900 seeds per gram.

  • Love this Chicory! 5

Posted by Kelley Coquillette on 5th Apr 2019

I own a small market farm in Lawrence, KS and I direct seeded this red stem chicory in late May in 2018 to sell at farmers market. It germinates incredibly well as a direct seeded crop and grew throughout the summer and fall all the way until our first freeze despite the fact that we had a 2-3 month drought and incredibly high summer temperatures. It also tastes delicious, is great for you, and sells very well at farmers market as a "red stem dandelion." I highly recommend this easy and hardy chicory.

  • Grew well as a fall crop 5

Grew this from direct seed in Sept. Harvested leaves and boiled to blanch, chop and add to salads with greens, boiled potato, hard cooked eggs and a French vinagrette. It gave just the light bitter bite to make the salad. Truly delicious. Looking forward to trying to force the roots next.
