Large, fluffy flowers with peach lower petals, pale yellow upper petals, and raspberry-red centers. The unusual two-tone flowers seem to glow in arrangements and in the landscape. In early summer, when the weather is cool, Prairie Peach is a pink shade of peach. As the weather turns hot, the color skews more to a light orange peach.
Prairie Peach is a strong, tall cut flower. Blossoms are 4” across and shapes range from rounded dahlia types to quilled cactus types, with the majority somewhere in between. Plants are up to 48” tall. There may be a small percentage of off-types in the mix.
Prairie Peach was bred by Lynn Byczynski, author of The Flower Farmer: An Organic Grower’s Guide to Raising and Selling Cut Flowers. After growing hundreds of thousands of zinnias over a 25-year career as a flower farmer, she knew she had found something special when this beauty appeared in a mix of open-pollinated zinnias from the Italian seed company Franchi Sementi. She selected and multiplied the strain for six years and now has enough to share with other flower lovers.
You can read more about the discovery and development of Prairie Peach on Lynn’s website, flowerterritory.com. Her book The Flower Farmer is available here.
