Monstrueux de Viroflay spinach is a very old variety- already present in the 16th century. Very hardy and resistant to the cold, it is highly prized for its numerous large, meaty, and smooth leaves and because it traditionally supplied Les Halles market in Paris before its demolition. While many market gardeners have replaced it with more consistent hybrid varieties, it is nevertheless a special variety to grow. It is listed on the Slow Food organization’s Ark of Taste, meaning it is endangered. Approximately 900 seeds.
