Winter Squash Butternut Rugosa (Wrinkled Butternut) (145-15)
Butternut Rugosa. Very large butternut type. Ribbed with 'wrinkled' skin. Very sweet and tasty, and much more interesting than the common butternut. Productive and a good keeper. 100 or so days to maturity. Grow as any other winter squash or butternut. After danger of frost, plant in full sun, in rich soil, with plenty of drainage. Large sprawling plant, so give them some room, at least 3-6 feet apart. They can be direct seeded, 1 inch deep, but thin to at least 3 feet. Can also be grown from transplants in regions with shorter growing seasons. Set out a 3-4 week old plant, taking care to not damage the root ball. Approximately 35 seeds. 5 gram packet. Approximately 7-15 seeds per gram.

Beautiful Butternut Rugosa
I purchased this wrinkled butternut squash variety and was not disappointed! The plants thrived and grew to be very large, each one producing 3-4 squash. Yummy! I plan to plant the same variety this year.

Best Butternut I've Tasted
The taste of this squash blew us away when we tried it in the 2011 season. And it's easy to grow, fighting right through the excessive weed growth in our squash field. We have a 200 member CSA and trying to convince members who were intimidated by its size that eating this squash would change their lives was a challenge, but we'll grow more next year. Don't know how well they store because we ate them too fast! Possible replacement for Waltham if they store well. Thanks!!!

Nice and Smooth
I bought Butternut Rugosa seeds from Mr. McKay about 2 years ago. The first year, they didn't grow well but that was most likely my fault. We moved that year and I didn't get them into the ground in IL until July and then I planted them in a compost pile with a lot of ashes. The squash grew on the vine but withered. This year I was much more successful. I had a real garden and applied the six sheet of newspaper technique around the squash hills to keep moisture in and weeds out. These plants travel 20 ft or more! I had 2 hills of butternut and yielded about 15 large squash. This is the best butternut I have ever had. Nice and smooth. I gave some to the neighbor and she baked it. Said the skin came off in one piece and it was wonderful. She had to know what it was - and she is married to a man who used to work for Del Monte and has a great garden. I cut up and froze a bunch and then gave away more.
